What is the Vigo County Food & Beverage Tax?
The tax is a 1% fee on prepared food including restaurant bills and hot food bar items. The fee does not apply to grocery items.

Can you offer an example?
On a $20 purchase you will pay 20 cents.

What are the next steps on the Vigo County Food & Beverage?
The Vigo County Council must first vote to implement.

How much will the tax generate?
It is projected to generate $1.2 to $2.1 million in revenue annually.

What will the additional revenue be used for?
The Capital Improvement Board will collect the funds to support a convention center.

Why does this particular tax create growth?
With Terre Haute’s proximity to Illinois and serving as a tourism hub for West Central Indiana, there is currently not a revenue mechanism for creating new opportunities for tourism (our largest growing industry), other than the Innkeeper's Tax, which requires an overnight stay for financial impact.

Why is a convention center important to Terre Haute/Vigo County?
According to the Convention and Visitors Bureau, while Vigo County is getting ready to experience its largest number of visitors in history, we are having to turn away many opportunities for conferences and large events due to lack of facilities.

How does tourism income increase quality of life for Vigo County residence?
It is often said small business is the backbone of a local economy.  More visitors in our downtown spurs new business growth, showcases the already established arts and culture programs, and increases the entrepreneurial spirit.  The overall impact of more people in Terre Haute/Vigo County, raises the tide, and in turn, raises our boat.

Who are the current members of the CIB?
